New Military Strength ATR Enclosure

Raleigh, NC, July 2013 – Beyond Electronics, a technology leader providing rugged, real-time computing solutions to OEMs and system integrators, has introduced the ¾_ATR, a second generation, off-the-shelf enclosure ideal for airborne, ship and ground mobile systems, as well as other harsh environment applications.

The new ¾_ATR accommodates 6U VME64x boards, as well as any IEEE1101 compliant conduction or convection-cooled board that employs a backplane. The enclosure is designed to accommodate a mix of air cooled and conduction cooled boards. This is achieved by adding removable thermal interface bars to the required slots. The ¾_ATR conforms to the standard ARINC404 size profile and utilizes the ARINC600 hold-downs.

The box comes standard with a flat, machined top and bottom cover to achieve the lowest possible profile. However, for systems requiring additional front panel wiring space, a deep top is available. Since the box is symmetric, the same top can be used on the bottom of the box to allow cable routing below the backplane. The new enclosure has adequate space on the front panel for multiple MIL-C-38999 connectors and can be ordered with the front panel pre-cut to match the application. For customers desiring to “hard wire” their I/O, full data for the backplane is available and Beyond Electronics is ready to help with in-house layout and design services. All user accessible and critical threaded holes contain steel inserts in formed threads for maximum strength and durability.

The new enclosure meets RTCADO160D and MIL-STD-810 requirements for harsh environment and airborne use, and is qualified for operating temperatures of -40°C to +85°C. The ¾_ATR employs conductive interior surfaces using flat gasketing methods to reduce EMC/EMI in accordance with MIL-STD-461.

Three power supply variants are available for the ¾_ATR, including two 650 Watt versions and one 250 Watt. The 650 Watt supply is available with AC or DC input while the 250 Watt is available with DC input only. The power supply is modular, easily removed and connects to the system through a back plane connector.

For the convection cooled configuration, the enclosure is cooled by a single mil-spec, high capacity fan that distributes a turbulent airflow to all installed boards. EMI filters cover all air inlets and outlets. In the shorter length, conduction cooled version, the covers are eliminated. For customers wanting to migrate from air cooled to conduction cooled boxes, all custom I/O can move between the boxes without modification since all internal dimensions are maintained.

The enclosure features active built in test. A small micro-controller monitors the power supply voltages and currents as well as the temperature of the unit. It also has access to the on-board hour meter function. It is capable of reporting this data plus other box specific data through the front panel fluorescent display and over an integrated Ethernet connection.

The new ¾_ATR has already been deployed, is in service and is available immediately.
